Here are a few thoughts while preparing to select eight keepers for my fantasy baseball team…
Sunday, April 1 is Opening Day of baseball season. (I’m giddy in anticipation.) Even the looming dark cloud of steroids can’t block out the sunshine that is baseball nirvana.
Don’t mess with Chris Simon of the New York Islanders. I’m no soothsayer, but I predict some vacation time in very near future for him.

Most would say sixteen teams are too many for a fantasy league. Our hockey league has fourteen, sixteen for baseball and a whopping twenty for football. If you haven’t played fantasy sports in a big league, you really haven’t played yet. The thinner the talent pool, the more you have to research and work to be good. On the positive side, with that many owners, getting trades done is much easier because somebody is always looking to improve.
Even in a league as big as ours, “Pronk†Hafner is being left unprotected for the expansion draft. Do you think it’s because he’s only DH-eligible?
Christmas in March? That’s having eleven “keeper-worthy†players but only being permitted to retain eight, then trading the three leftover for a fat draft pick. It’s like being given fantasy lemons and stirring up make-believe lemonade.
Most likely to impersonate Justin Verlander v2006 this season? Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies. Verlander was up for the cup of coffee in ’05 and was hammered then he made the roster out of spring training last year and threw 200 innings en route to the World Series. Hamels, on the other hand, came up before the All-Star break in ’06 and was subsequently smacked around. Post-All-Star break? 3.39 ERA with 101 Ks in 87.2 innings. Expect this type of production to continue in 2007.
How about a pitcher about to make ‘the leap’ into Cy Young contention? Chris R. Young of the Padres; 6’10†and sandwiched in the roatation between Jake Peavy and Greg Maddux, one can reasonably expect Young to win 15-17 games this year.
Oh, and Young’s definitely one of my “keepers†this year.
Ron Artest might have assaulted his wife? No way, not Artest. He’s such a calm, cool, collected guy. He’s not the kind of person to fly off the handle. I can’t believe it.

Who will the Raiders draft with the #1 pick in April? What will the Lions do with #2? What about Cleveland with the #3? Considering how their respective management teams have done the last few years, I expect the Buccaneers are happily sitting with the fourth pick and anticipating dividends better than they probably deserve.
NASCAR will be at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend. In Vegas you can bet on just about anything. I wonder what the odds are on the first turn being a left?
It’s quarterfinals time in futbol (soccer to us non-socialist Americans) and nobody here cares a bit. Is it because we fluoridate our water that we don’t take this sport seriously?
What the heck, here are my other keepers: C Victor Martinez, 1B Mark Teixeira, SS Carlos Guillen, 3B A-Rod, OFs Ichiro and soon-to-be MVP Grady Sizemore along with Cy Young hopefuls Jake Peavy and Chris Young. In a sixteen team league, that’s an All-Star roster.
Am I the only one that believes the Penguins would be a perfect fit in Winnipeg?
The deal between Major League Baseball and DirecTV finally came through. As a diehard baseball fan and cable subscriber (and thus, shutout from getting MLB’s Extra Innings package), I’m crushed. It’s as if Bud Selig is attempting to alienate the last few supporters he’s ever had. Two thumbs down, Bud.
Three articles this week from Canon Fodder. This will probably be the norm under the guise that less is more. Actually a sick child and an ailing wife kind of put creativity on hold. (I just don’t feel funny when loved ones are miserable.)
I’m looking for a logo for our wonderful little blog. I’m thinking of something with a cannon theme, but I’m open to any suggestions. Have an idea you’re willing to give away? Drop me an e-mail at jeff@canon-fodder.com along with any questions or comments you may have about the world of sports.
Look for another article on Monday and keep passing Canon Fodder to friends and family.
